Tacoma one Win from Title
May 27, 2024 by @CollegeBaseba12
The NWAC Championship baseball tournament, held at David Story Field, Lower Columbia College in Longview, WA, showcased some of the best talent from across the region. Beginning on Thursday, May 23, 2024, and concluding on Monday, May 27, 2024, the double-elimination format tested the mettle of eight competing teams: Bellevue Bulldogs, Blue Mountain Timberwolves, Edmonds Tritons, Everett Trojans, Linn-Benton Roadrunners, Lower Columbia Red Devils, Spokane Sasquatch, and Tacoma Titans.
On May 24, Owen Luchies of Lower Columbia delivered a standout performance against Blue Mountain. Securing his 10th win of the season, Luchies pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 earned run, while striking out 5 without issuing a single walk. His efforts helped propel Lower Columbia to a 6-2 victory.
Despite the strong showings, both Canadian-supported teams were eventually eliminated. Everett fell to Spokane in a close 3-2 contest on May 25, and Lower Columbia, the last team with Canadian players in the tournament, was defeated by the undefeated Tacoma Titans, 6-4, on May 26.
Despite their elimination, the Canadian players can hold their heads high. Owen Luchies, with his stellar season stats (10-2, 1.51 ERA, 58 Ks) and top ranking in NWAC for wins, demonstrated his dominance on the mound. Ben Hewitt, Callum Young, and Willem Heilker also showcased their pitching prowess, contributing significantly to their teams’ efforts throughout the season and the tournament. These athletes have represented Canada admirably and have been key contributors to their teams' successes this year.
As the tournament reaches its climax, the final showdown is set between the undefeated Tacoma Titans and the Linn-Benton Roadrunners. Tacoma, needing just one more win to secure the title, has shown consistent strength and resilience. Meanwhile, Linn-Benton, having fought through the elimination bracket, is determined to challenge Tacoma's unbeaten run. The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the NWAC Championship, with both teams eager to claim the coveted title.
Stay tuned for what promises to be an electrifying finale to an already thrilling tournament.
