Magical Run Ends for Pitre, Kentucky at MCWS

OMAHA, Neb. - The magical season for Quebec's Émilien Pitre and the Kentucky Wildcats came to a crashing end on Wednesday at the College World Series. The Wildcats were rudely awakened from their dream run by a seven-run first inning onslaught capped by a grand slam as they fell 15-4 to Florida.

While it wasn't the finale Pitre and Kentucky wanted, the junior second baseman from Repentigny continued his outstanding campaign. He went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and belted a two-run homer, his 10th of the year. It was the 23rd multi-hit and 16th multi-RBI game this season for Pitre, who has 41 career multi-hit contests.

Just last Friday, Pitre was named a Third Team All-American and to the SEC All-Defensive Team for the second straight season. The do-it-all star has shined at the plate (.298, 9 HR, 56 RBI, 25 SB), on the basepaths, and with the glove, posting a .992 fielding percentage. Kentucky head coach Nick Mingione calls Pitre "perhaps the best all-around player" he's coached in 20 years.

In the afternoon, #1 Tennessee and Canadian freshman Robin Villeneuve punched their ticket to the MCWS Finals for the first time since 1951 by defeating #6 Florida State 7-2. The Volunteers are now 58-16, setting a program record for wins.

Villeneuve, a Gatineau native, has hit .287 in 34 games with 5 homers, 22 RBI and 20 runs scored in his debut season for the powerhouse Vols.

Tennessee will face Texas A&M in the best-of-three Finals starting Saturday at 7:30pm ET on ESPN.

Congratulations to Émilien Pitre on a spectacular junior campaign and making Kentucky proud. And best of luck to Robin Villeneuve and the top-ranked Volunteers as they play for the national championship this weekend!
